Lowering Calcium Hardness In Swimming Pools

When it comes to owning a residential and commercial swimming pool in many parts of the country dealing with high Calcium Hardness levels is extremely common.  This is a frustrating issue that many swimming pool owners deal with in the Southwest and Southern United States. It’s calcium, magnesium, and other hardness minerals in the tap water and unless you are willing to install an RO Fill Line system, you can’t prevent it from coming into your pool. So, how do you deal with it?

Unfortunately, when individuals build swimming pools they are not made aware of this problem before it appears. Typically, you will see it on the water features and spillways if you have them before the tile line if they are in use. As water splashes the tile and rock formations it is left out to dry in the scorching summer heat, and when it dries you will see calcium scaling that builds up over time. With that said, the more you run the water feature or spillways the worse it will get.

As water evaporates in the swimming pool the calcium and other hard minerals remain in the pool. In the swimming pool industry, the normal levels of Calcium Hardness are between 200 – 400 parts per million (ppm). However, in many areas of the country, tap water can be measured at 400 ppm and higher! So what is a pool owner to do?

If you talk to many in the swimming pool industry they will tell you to drain and refill your swimming pool. Remember though that the hardness levels coming out of the tap are sometimes higher than what is recommended. That is why at Pure Water Industries we recommend The Puripool Process for both residential and commercial swimming pools. This is a mobile service that comes to your pool and recycles the pool water onsite. Just this past week we recycled a 15,000-gallon swimming pool that was dealing with high levels of Calcium Hardness. The following were the initial water chemistry results that we measured:

      Calcium Hardness – 840 ppm

Total Dissolved Solids – 5652 ppm

      Salt – 3735 ppm

After filtering this swimming pool with Reverse Osmosis (RO) filtration we were able to lower the levels to the following:

      Calcium Hardness – 150 ppm

Total Dissolved Solids – 1100 ppm

      Salt – 762 ppm

The biggest key with our service is the fact that we were able to lower their Calcium Hardness to 150 ppm which is much lower than tap water. This is one of the biggest selling points of our service. There are numerous other benefits but if you want to swim in softer water and try to prevent scaling using The Puripool Process is the best way to go.
