It’s recommended to have calcium hardness levels between 200-400 parts per million (ppm) and CYA between 40-120 ppm. As water evaporates from the pool and fill water is added, calcium levels rise. When the calcium levels reach 600 ppm it is recommended that the pool be drained. The same applies to CYA when the level approaches 100 ppm. Calcium tends to act as a sponge and literally consumes the chlorine in pools and leaves unsightly stains on the tile and plaster surfaces of the pool. CYA is a stabilizer and helps chlorine function, but when it gets too high it binds up all chemicals, thus turning pools green. When discussing swimming pool water maintenance most experts will recommend a drain and refill every 2-3 years.
