Calcium Hardness Removal From Swimming Pools
Calcium bicarbonate is not a naturally occurring solid, but it does form in water when calcium, carbonate and bicarbonate ions are dissolved with carbon dioxide. Water with high calcium bicarbonate content is often referred to as “hard water” because of the scale it leaves in pipes, sinks and most importantly in this case, swimming pools. This is a common problem in the southwest because the fill water is from the Colorado River that carves its way through the Grand Canyon, which is loaded with limestone. Calcium, which is relatively harmless to humans, causes numerous problems in swimming pools. As water evaporates in swimming pools the hardness minerals such as calcium remain in solution and build up over time.
As the Calcium Hardness (CH) increases in swimming pools, it damages heat exchangers in pool heaters, pump shafts and pool plumbing, not to mention the appearance on waterline tile, spillways, and colored plaster. Bruce Wettstein – President Pure Water Industries says, “When individuals build pools this is typically something that they’re unaware of and he states that before someone spends thousands of dollars on elaborate water features and tile they should be educated on what could happen.” In the southwest U.S., it’s recommended that pool owners drain their pools every 2-3 years because of increased Calcium Hardness but normally these individuals find out after staining has occurred. As a general rule of thumb, Wettstein says, “pool owners should not allow calcium to get over 600 parts per million (ppm).”
Since most of the entire southern U.S. is having water shortage issues, pool owners have two options when deciding what to do with old hard water. They can drain the pool and fill it up with water that can be as high as 500 or more ppm or they can recycle the water. In the end, why drain the pool when you can conserve almost 85% of the water and be left with a much better end product.” Pure Water Industries has been recycling swimming pool water in the greater San Diego area and just conserved over 44 million gallons of water last week from individuals not draining their pools. In the end, The Puripool Process is the best option because we utilize Reverse Osmosis (RO) filtration to lower Calcium Hardness, TDS, and CYA without draining the swimming pool and it’s the best because you can have it performed on your pool by simply calling us today!
