Lowering TDS In Your Swimming Pool
If you own a residential or commercial swimming pool, live in the Southwestern United States, use liquid chlorine, or have a salt pool, your Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) levels will naturally rise. That is why it is important to know how to deal with TDS and how to lower/remove TDS from your swimming pool. You can either perform a drain and refill or recycle the water using The Puripool Process. If you talk to most pool professionals when TDS levels rise, the typical response would be to drain and refill the swimming pool but with water being at a premium draining a swimming pool should be your last option so Pure Water Industries would like to introduce you to Reverse Osmosis (RO) Mobile Filtration for your swimming pool. With mobile filtration, we can come to your residential or commercial swimming pool, recycle the water onsite, and you don’t have to do a thing other than providing us access to your backyard.
Swimming pool TDS is defined as, “the total amount of mobile charged ions, including minerals, salts or metals dissolved in a given volume of water, expressed in units of mg per unit volume of water (mg/L), also referred to as parts per million (ppm).” In the pool industry TDS is directly related to the purity of water and usually a number that is referred to when it’s time to change out the existing water in your swimming pool. Between TDS and Calcium Hardness, it’s the two most common factors in the pool industry as to why someone would suggest changing out the water in your pool. Please note, TDS is primarily made up of salt and calcium and you will want to think about changing out the water when your TDS levels rise above 3000 parts per million (ppm). If you own a salt pool this is a completely different number and you will want to manage your Calcium Hardness to prevent scaling on the electrode plates.
Dissolved solids come from organic sources such as leaves and silt, it can also come from fertilizers and pesticides too. Dissolved solids also come from inorganic materials such as rocks and air that may contain calcium bicarbonate. But, the most commonplace that these dissolved solids come from is our water and liquid chlorine if you use it. The water picks up many of these metals because of where it is sourced which over time causes numerous problems like scaling to the interior finish of the swimming pool, the water tile line, filtration equipment, and decorative water features. TDS in pool water will naturally climb and when it does you will need to change out the water in your swimming pool (typically every two years). The good news is RO will lower TDS from pool water which means you can conserve water, swim in superior quality water, and prevent unnecessary exposure of your interior finish.
Using Reverse Osmosis filtration will also lower Calcium Hardness, Cyanuric Acid (CYA), waterborne diseases, phosphates, nitrates, and so much more without draining the pool. In fact, since we use high-pressure RO we can conserve up to 85% of the existing water in the swimming pool which is an excellent alternative to a drain and refill.
