Reverse Osmosis Lowers Calcium, TDS, and CYA

Reverse Osmosis (RO) is the best filtration for your swimming pool. Pure Water Industries Puripool Process can and will lower Calcium Hardness, TDS, as well as excess CYA (Cyanuric Acid) along with salt, bacteria, viruses, phosphates, nitrates, and so much more.  Many of our Service Providers (as well as ourselves) get called out to primarily lower Calcium Hardness and CYA in areas where the concern is to deal with hard water.  We know of nothing that is capable of dealing with hard water and CYA as quickly or efficiently as Reverse Osmosis pool filtration.

The Purpose of CYA

In an outdoor pool with no CYA, chlorine is consumed within the first 2 hours of sunlight hitting the pool.  CYA serves to protect the chlorine (sometimes called sunscreen for chlorine) and allow it to stick around longer.  However, too much CYA will bind over the chlorine and will not allow it to work.  We often hear that “I can’t keep chlorine in my pool” when it really is present but unable to break through the grip of CYA. In the end, there is a direct relationship between the amount of CYA in a pool and the proper chlorine level.

It isn’t uncommon for us to pull up to swimming pools with CYA levels as high as 100 parts per million (ppm) and higher! When this happens it can be much more challenging to keep free chlorine working optimally in your swimming pool because the factor to establish the level of free chlorine needed to combat algae is the level of CYA x .075. So, if you had 100 ppm like the pool we just filtered it would take approximately 7.5 ppm (free chlorine) to keep your pool algae free and that can be challenging especially when the water is warm. That’s why the recommended levels of CYA in a chlorine pool are between 30 -50 ppm. Along with CYA the other big reason why we are called out is high levels of Calcium Hardness which will scale your tile, interior finish, filtration equipment and so much more. Just this past week we were called out to a residential swimming pool and we documented their water chemistry below…..

Initial Chemistry:

Calcium Hardness – 700 ppm

Total Dissolved Solids – 6248 ppm

Cyanuric Acid – 100 ppm

After filtering this swimming pool with RO filtration we were able to lower the above levels to the following:

Calcium Hardness – 120 ppm

Total Dissolved Solids – 1032 ppm

Cyanuric Acid – 0 ppm

All of these numbers were able to be lowered in less than 24 hours. This customer not only conserved over 80% of their water but they were also able to create a swimming pool environment with RO water to swim in.
